Where to Stay in Cairns: CBD vs Trinity Beach vs Palm Cove vs Port Douglas

The Short Answer

Stay in Cairns CBD if you want to walk to the marina, restaurants, the Esplanade and most tour departure points.

Stay in Trinity Beach if you want a relaxed beach holiday with enough places to eat, without paying Palm Cove prices.

Stay in Palm Cove if you want a beautiful, romantic resort village where the hotel, pool, spa and long lunches are part of the trip.

Stay in Port Douglas if you want a polished holiday town, Four Mile Beach and a better base for exploring the Daintree—but do not mind being well outside Cairns.

None of them is the “best” place in every situation. I would put different friends in all four, and I would feel very confident about each choice.

Stay in Cairns CBD If You Want Everything to Be Easy

Cairns CBD is the practical winner.

If you are taking reef boats, the Spirit of Cairns dinner cruise, the Fitzroy Island ferry or the Green Island ferry, staying near the marina makes the morning almost effortless. You can walk down with your bag instead of arranging a very early taxi. When the boat brings you back sunburned, salty and completely exhausted, your shower is only a few minutes away.

The CBD is also the easiest choice if you do not want a car. You have the Esplanade, lagoon, restaurants, bars, Rusty’s Market, coffee, supermarkets and tour pickups around you. It is the base I would recommend for a first trip when someone has only a few days and wants to pack a lot in.

The trade-off is simple: Cairns city does not have a swimming beach. The waterfront is beautiful, but it is an estuary. You swim at the lagoon (in the shape of FNQ) or the hotel pool, then travel north for beach days.

Where I Would Stay in Cairns CBD

Shangri-La The Marina, Cairns is my first pick for families and anyone whose itinerary revolves around the reef terminal. It is right on the marina, close to restaurants and wonderfully convenient when you are carrying beach bags, snorkel gear and tired children. This is the hotel I keep coming back to when location matters most. Our families when visiting also prefer to stay here. It also has secure, covered parking.

Crystalbrook Flynn is the choice for someone who wants the Esplanade, restaurants and a more polished city-holiday feeling. I like it for couples, friends and anyone who wants to walk out for a morning coffee, an evening drink or a lap of the lagoon without thinking about transport.

Cairns Plaza Hotel is my value-minded central pick. It is farther along the Esplanade, but still walkable and well placed for the waterfront. I would look here when I want the city location without making the hotel the most expensive part of the trip.

Also compare Hilton Cairns, Pacific Hotel Cairns and Pullman Cairns International. All three keep you in the marina end of town, which is exactly where I would want to be for early boats and dinner cruises.

Cairns CBD is best for: first-time visitors, short stays, travellers without a car, reef and island day trips, food and nightlife, and anyone who hates complicated mornings.

Stay in Trinity Beach If You Want a Real Beach Holiday

Trinity Beach feels like a place where people actually live, which is part of why we love it.

You have a long sandy beach, a patrolled swimming area, the stinger enclosure when it is in place, places to eat and a much quieter rhythm than Cairns CBD. You can walk down with coffee, swim in the morning, go back for breakfast and feel like the day has already been successful.

It is a brilliant middle ground. It feels properly tropical and beachy, but it is not as styled or expensive as Palm Cove. You are still within easy reach of Cairns, the airport and the other northern beaches, especially if you have a car.

The trade-off is that reef boats and many tours leave from Cairns. If your itinerary has several dawn departures from the marina, the back-and-forth will get old. Trinity is at its best when beach time is a priority, not just the place you sleep between city tours.

Where I Would Stay in Trinity Beach

Coral Sands Beachfront Resort is the easy recommendation because it gives you the apartment-style beach stay people imagine when they book the northern beaches. You have the beach across the road and room to settle in, which suits families, longer stays and anyone who likes having more than a hotel bedroom. Also check AirBnb, as it is surrounded by walkable neighborhoods.

Trinity Beach is best for: families, longer stays, travellers with a car, morning beach walks, relaxed dinners and people who want to feel out of the city without going all the way to Port Douglas. This is where you find me with a book in the afternoon.

Stay in Palm Cove If the Hotel Is Part of the Holiday

Palm Cove is the pretty one. I mean like really pretty!

The esplanade is lined with enormous melaleuca trees, the restaurants face the water and the whole village is designed for lingering. It is where I would send someone planning a romantic trip, a birthday weekend, a spa escape or a holiday where a long lunch and an afternoon beside the pool absolutely count as activities.

You can walk around Palm Cove easily once you are there. There are restaurants, cafés, the jetty, the beach and beautiful resort pools close together. It feels more like a destination than a suburb. Plus you’ll spot dolphins in the surf!

The trade-off is that it can cost more, and you are still travelling to Cairns for many marina departures. If you book Palm Cove because it looks dreamy, leave time to enjoy Palm Cove. Do not pay for a gorgeous resort and then spend every day leaving before breakfast.

Where I Would Stay in Palm Cove

Peppers Beach Club & Spa is the classic Palm Cove choice when you want the resort to be part of the reason for the trip. This is where I would look for couples, a celebration or anyone who wants the pool-and-cocktail version of the tropics.

Palm Cove is best for: couples, spa weekends, milestone trips, resort lovers, destination dining and travellers who want the holiday to feel beautiful even when they are doing absolutely nothing.

Stay in Port Douglas If You Want a Resort Town and the Daintree Nearby

Port Douglas is not Cairns with a nicer beach. It is its own holiday town.

You have Four Mile Beach, a lively restaurant centre around Macrossan Street, resort accommodation and a much shorter start for trips toward Mossman Gorge and the Daintree. If the rainforest is just as important to you as the reef, Port Douglas can be an excellent base.

It also feels polished without requiring you to dress up. You can have a beautiful dinner, walk past resort pools and still feel perfectly normal in sandals.

The trade-off is distance. Staying in Port Douglas for a Cairns marina departure means an early transfer and a long return. Some reef and Daintree tours collect there or leave nearby, but you need to check your specific bookings before choosing it as a base.

Where I Would Stay in Port Douglas

Sheraton Grand Mirage Resort, Port Douglas is the full resort choice: enormous pools, tropical grounds and direct access to Four Mile Beach. I would choose it when the plan is to enjoy the resort, have slow mornings and mix day trips with unapologetically lazy afternoons.

If you want to walk to restaurants every night, also compare places closer to Macrossan Street. The Sheraton is a resort escape; the town centre is a different style of holiday.

Port Douglas is best for: resort stays, Four Mile Beach, Daintree-focused itineraries, longer trips, golfers, couples and travellers who are happy to be outside Cairns.

What I Would Choose for Different Trips

For a first trip with three or four busy days: Cairns CBD.

For several reef and island departures: Cairns CBD, ideally near the marina.

For a family that wants an apartment and daily beach time: Trinity Beach.

For a romantic birthday or anniversary: Palm Cove.

For a week split between resort days, reef and rainforest: Port Douglas.

For someone who wants beach mornings but still plans to drive all over the region: Trinity Beach.

For someone without a car who wants restaurants and tours at the door: Cairns CBD.

For someone who wants to arrive, exhale and barely leave a beautiful hotel: Palm Cove or Port Douglas.

Do You Need a Car?

In Cairns CBD, no. You can build an excellent trip around walking, tour pickups and the occasional transfer.

In Trinity Beach and Palm Cove, a car gives you much more freedom. You can reach Cairns, explore the other beaches, stop at Ellis Beach and head into the Tablelands without designing every day around a shuttle.

In Port Douglas, you can enjoy the town without driving if your tours collect you, but a car is valuable for exploring the Daintree and making the Great Barrier Reef Drive part of the trip.

If you are nervous about driving on the left or tight rainforest roads, do not rent a car just because you think you should. Stay central and book the day tours. The best base is the one that makes your actual holiday easier.

My Honest Pick

If I were sending someone to Cairns for the first time, especially for reef boats and a short stay, I would put them in Cairns CBD near the marina.

If they had a week, a car and children who wanted to swim every morning, I would send them to Trinity Beach.

If they were celebrating something and wanted the holiday to feel romantic before they even left the room, Palm Cove.

If they wanted a proper resort trip with the Daintree high on the list, Port Douglas.

The mistake is not choosing the “wrong” one. The mistake is booking the prettiest hotel without looking at where your days begin.

Match the base to the trip, and Far North Queensland becomes much easier to enjoy.
