Freshwater is not where I would send you if you told me you wanted to walk out of your hotel and immediately be surrounded by bars, restaurants and tour desks.
For that, stay downtown.
But if you told me you were coming to Cairns for more than a couple of nights, wanted a house with a pool, wanted to wake up looking at mountains instead of another hotel balcony and did not mind having a car?
I would tell you to look at Freshwater.
Because Freshwater was our home.
And we love it.
This is the Cairns we actually lived
One of the things I want this site to do is show you both versions of Cairns.
There is tourist Cairns, which I genuinely love. We do the reef trips. We go on the dinner cruises. We take the train to Kuranda. We eat along the waterfront.
Then there is everyday Cairns.
Freshwater is much more of that.
It is families walking home from school. It is people stopping for coffee in the morning. It is houses tucked under huge tropical trees, older Queenslanders, pools in back gardens and mountains rising behind everything.
Depending on where you are, you can look out across cane fields toward the mountains.
You hear the Kuranda Scenic Railway making its way through the neighborhood during the day.
And then it gets quiet again.
That is one of the things I miss most about it.
Why I think it works so well for a longer stay
If I were coming to Cairns for one or two nights and had never been before, I would probably stay downtown. It is easy. You can walk everywhere. Your reef boat is right there. Restaurants are right there.
But for a longer stay, I would seriously look at Freshwater.
There are houses, apartments and holiday rentals around here where you can have things you simply are not getting from a standard hotel room: a kitchen, outdoor space, a pool, a proper living room and sometimes really beautiful views.
It makes Cairns feel less like somewhere you are visiting and a little more like somewhere you are living for a week.
Have breakfast outside.
Throw your wet reef stuff over something to dry.
Buy tropical fruit.
Come home from a giant day out and jump in the pool.
That is a very different trip.

This is probably the biggest practical reason travelers end up discovering Freshwater.
The Kuranda Scenic Railway stops at Freshwater railway station on its way into the mountains.
And personally, I love starting the trip here.
The station feels more like part of the whole experience than simply boarding in central Cairns. You are already surrounded by greenery and mountains before the train really starts climbing.
The railway becomes part of the rhythm of the neighborhood. We used to hear it go by from home.
It never bothered me.
Quite the opposite.
There is something lovely about hearing that old tourist train rolling through while you are doing completely ordinary things at home.

Have breakfast at Vines before you go
This is also where one of my favorite Cairns rituals comes into the equation.
Before heading up to Kuranda from Freshwater, go to Vines at Limberlost for breakfast.
Vines is my favorite breakfast spot in Cairns, and that recommendation has very little to do with convenience.
I would send you there anyway.
It is inside Limberlost Garden Centre, where you can sit surrounded by tropical plants and eat underneath an enormous old mango tree.
Get a cappuccino.
Get eggs.
Absolutely look at the cake cabinet even if you have just eaten breakfast.

Drive slowly through here
One thing I will say if you are staying in Freshwater: slow down.
This is a neighborhood.
There are schools nearby, kids walking home, people on bikes, dogs being walked and families going about their normal day.
I think that is part of what makes staying here special, but it also means treating it like someone’s home rather than a resort precinct.
Because it is.
It was ours.
Would I stay here without a car?
Probably not for my first visit.
Freshwater makes the most sense to me when you have a car and want to use it as your base for exploring.
This is for the trip where you are heading out to swimming holes, driving north, going down toward the Tablelands, doing the reef one day and disappearing somewhere completely different the next.
If your dream Cairns trip is cocktails on the Esplanade every evening and never touching a steering wheel, stay in the city.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with that trip.
But if you want a little more space and a little more quiet, Freshwater is worth a look.
Why I am biased
Because I am completely biased.
This is not a neighborhood I discovered while researching this blog.
It is where we lived.
It is where I could walk to my favorite cafe.
It is where I could ride my bike everywhere.
It is where our family came to meet us for breakfast.
It is where we heard the Kuranda train pass during the day and looked out toward those ridiculous green mountains that somehow never started feeling normal.
There are flashier places to stay around Cairns.
There are certainly more convenient ones.
But Freshwater feels like home.
And if you are staying long enough to want a little piece of what living in Cairns actually feels like, this is one of the places I would look first.
