If you only have time for one island day from Cairns, Fitzroy Island is one of the first places I would send you. It has that rare combination of beautiful snorkeling, proper hiking trails, a beach that feels completely tucked away from the world, and a restaurant and bar waiting when you are ready to stop moving. You can make the day as adventurous or as lazy as you want, which is probably why we keep going back.
We have snorkeled around a lot of Cairns, and Fitzroy is still one of our favorite places to get in the water. On a clear day the visibility is fantastic. You can float over coral and watch tiny fish flickering underneath you, then suddenly see a big grouper or a Maori wrasse cruise past like it owns the place. Even before you swim, look down from the pier. Big fish love hanging around there, and it is a wonderful preview of what is waiting below.

The Ferry Is Part of the Fun
The boat from Cairns is a big passenger ferry, and everyone piles on together whether they are visiting for the day or staying at the resort. The whole thing has a very relaxed tropical-island feeling. People literally arrive with wagons loaded with cooler bags, beach toys, snorkel gear, and enough stuff to set up camp for the day.
The website may say one thing about hard coolers, but in our experience cooler bags are completely normal. We have never had a bag searched, and everyone has always been very chill. For a day trip, I would pack drinks, snacks, sunscreen, a towel, and anything that makes a beach day more comfortable. If you want to buy lunch instead, there is a restaurant and bar on the island, so you do not have to carry your whole life with you either.
There are no assigned seats. On the way over, we usually find somewhere we can watch Cairns disappear and the island grow larger ahead of us. It immediately feels like the day has started before you even step onto the sand.
Snorkeling at Fitzroy Island
Snorkeling is the reason I would choose Fitzroy for a first island day. The water can be incredibly clear, with coral, tiny reef fish, larger fish, groupers, and Maori wrasse all within reach of an ordinary beach snorkel. There are a few little snorkeling trails and areas to explore, so it never feels like you are staring at the same patch of reef all day.
The water can also feel surprisingly cold. If a stinger suit is included with your booking, wear it. I am not saying that because I spend the entire swim worrying about jellyfish. I wear the giant black zip-up onesie because it keeps me warm enough to stay in longer, and it gives you excellent sun protection while you are floating face-down without realizing how much sun you are getting.
Give yourself more time in the water than you think you will need. This is not a place where I want to snorkel for twenty minutes, tick a box, and leave. Once I start spotting fish, I always want one more pass.
Walk to Nudey Beach
When you are ready to dry off, walk out to Nudey Beach. The trail itself is part of the experience, and we often see monitors and other lizards along the way. Then the trees open onto massive granite boulders, clear water, and a view back toward False Cape with almost no buildings in sight. It feels like you have wandered much farther from Cairns than you actually have.
The boulders are my favorite part. They form little pockets and almost-private rooms along the beach, with places to climb, sit, and look into tiny tide pools for fish and crabs. You may or may not see someone topless—it is Nudey Beach, after all—but the real magic is how wild and tucked away it feels. You can find your own corner between the rocks and forget there is a resort on the other side of the island.
Bring water and give yourself permission to linger. This is one of those beaches where the plan to take a quick photo can turn into an hour of climbing over rocks, looking into pools, and deciding you need another swim.
Hike for the Coral Sea View
Fitzroy is not just a snorkeling island. There is also a hike up toward the top of the island, where the reward is a huge view over the Coral Sea. I love that you can spend the morning underwater and the afternoon looking down over all of that blue from above.
It is a proper tropical walk, so I would do it before the hottest part of the day if hiking matters to you. From the top, the water seems to go on forever. It is the kind of view that makes you stop talking for a minute.
Stop for Lunch and a Drink
One of the reasons Fitzroy works so well as a day trip is that you do not have to spend every minute being organized. There is a restaurant and bar, and the whole area feels sunny, open, and wonderfully laid-back. We like being able to snorkel, hike, eat something, and sit down with a cold drink without turning the day into a military operation.
If you brought food in a cooler bag, find a shady place for a picnic. If you did not, order lunch and enjoy the island atmosphere. Either way, leave a little empty space in the schedule. Fitzroy is best when you can follow whatever sounds good next.
How I Would Spend One Perfect Day
I would take an early ferry, claim a good spot, and watch the coastline on the way over. Once on the island, I would snorkel first while I am fresh and excited, then dry off and walk to Nudey Beach. I would spend far too long around the granite boulders and tide pools, come back for lunch and a drink, and decide whether I had the energy for the summit or wanted to get straight back into the water.
Before leaving, I would make one last stop at the pier to look down for the big fish. There is always that feeling that something enormous might glide out of the blue if you wait another minute.
The Last Boat Back to Cairns
The final boat of the day back to Cairns gets super crowded. There are no assigned seats and no complicated rules about where you can sit or stand, so if the view matters to you, get yourself a spot by the railing. The ride home is beautiful, and I would much rather watch Fitzroy shrink behind the boat and the Cairns mountains come back into view than spend the whole trip staring at the inside of the ferry.
Everyone is sandy, sun-tired, and carrying twice as much as they seemed to bring over. Wagons, cooler bags, beach toys, damp towels—it is all part of the happy chaos. That crowded last ferry is not elegant, but it feels like the end of a genuinely good island day.
Where to Stay Before a Fitzroy Island Day Trip
If you have an early ferry, staying beside the marina makes the entire morning easier. You can wake up, walk down with your beach bag and cooler, and be standing at the departure point without arranging a taxi across Cairns.

Would I Book Fitzroy Island Again?
Absolutely. Fitzroy gives you coral, clear water, big fish, granite beaches, lizards, hiking trails, cold drinks, and a ferry home at sunset distance from Cairns. It can be an active day, a beach day, or a little of both.
