Notes from far north Queensland and beyond.

The places we actually eat.
The swims we keep going back to.
The touristy things that are genuinely worth doing.
And a few local secrets. Just not all of them.

Where do you want to go?

You’re Going to Cairns?

Good. I have notes.

Hi, I’m Mackenzie! I married an Aussie, inherited a family in Cairns, and now spend a ridiculous amount of time telling friends where they should eat, where they should swim and what they absolutely shouldn’t miss when they come to Far North Queensland.

Eventually I realized I should probably stop sending everyone enormous text messages…

So this is Indy’s Post.

Part travel guide, part field notebook and part collection of recommendations gathered from actually living here, coming back again and again, and having a very opinionated local family.

Indy's Field Note, #1. Don't over-plan Cairns. Leave some room for eather, a spontaneous swim, a longer lunch than expected or somebody saying, "actually, while we're down this way..." That's ususally when the good stuff happens.

A Little Local Knowledge goes a long way.

Cairns is one of those places where the obvious things are incredible. Yes, you should see the Great Barrier Reef. Yes, you should go into the rainforest.

But there’s also the bakery you should stop at on the way, the swimming hole you’d drive straight past if nobody told you, the hotel where our Sydney family always stays, and the little things that turn a good trip into the one you keep talking about.

That’s the stuff I’m here for.

Staying in Cairns?

Start somewhere we’d actually send our own family.

From marina view in the city to farm stays and rainforest escapes farther out, there are the places I’d look at first.
